Gerald Tanaka Khosa 's Biography:

Born: June 14, 1991
Passed: December 7, 2011

On December 7, 2011, we tragically lost Gerald Tanaka Khosa in a car accident. In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, his family and loved ones resolved to honor his memory by continuing the path of compassion, leadership, and community service that he so passionately pursued in his lifetime.

Gerald, fondly known as Tanaka by his family, carried a name rich in meaning and spirit. In Shona culture, Tanaka means “We are good” or “We have been blessed.” It is a name that celebrates goodness, wellbeing, and gratitude, often given as a declaration that life is good and that a child has brought joy and blessing to the family. Gerald’s life lived up to the very essence of his name — he was indeed a blessing to all who knew him.

Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Gerald spent his early childhood in Chinhoyi before relocating to Northern Virginia, USA, at the age of seven. There, he thrived both academically and socially — excelling in school, sports, and community activities. A natural athlete with a vibrant spirit, Gerald captained his high school football team, the Battlefield Bobcats, leading them to the championships and earning the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP).

More than an athlete, Gerald was a born leader and a people’s person. His calm demeanor, infectious smile, and genuine love for others drew people to him effortlessly. He immersed himself in community work, volunteering as a youth basketball referee and mentoring younger children. He valued family, friendship, and meaningful human connection, consistently nurturing relationships and making those around him feel seen, supported, and valued.

After completing high school in the United States, Gerald returned to Zimbabwe to complete his Upper Sixth at Lomagundi College in Chinhoyi. The transition, while challenging, revealed his resilience and adaptability. He embraced the Zimbabwean way of life with enthusiasm and quickly became an integral part of the school community. Gerald played 1st Team Rugby, represented Mashonaland West Province in basketball as Vice Captain, and earned a place on the national team selection.

Gerald had an adventurous spirit and took every opportunity to explore Zimbabwe, visiting Kariba, Victoria Falls, and Gonarezhou, among other iconic destinations. His love for people and places was matched only by his commitment to making a difference. In his own words:

“These are my people, thus my obligation.”

In 2011, Gerald began his tertiary education at Varsity College in Cape Town, South Africa. His time there was marked by personal growth, expanding friendships, and a deepening resolve to serve his community. Though his life was cut short, his legacy lives on through the values he embodied and the lives he touched.

Today, in honor of his enduring spirit and the meaning of his name, the Gerald Tanaka Khosa Foundation continues his mission — empowering youth, supporting the underprivileged, and building opportunities for communities in Zimbabwe and beyond. We invite you to join us in carrying forward his dream and ensuring that his light continues to shine.

Forever in our hearts — we cherish the years we shared with him, and we remain grateful for the blessing he was in our lives.
